Privacy Policy

How we collect, use, and protect your personal information.

Last updated: 18 June 2026

1. Who we are

SafeShare (“SafeShare”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the website and services at safeshare.au, a trust platform for the Australian share-housing market. We provide identity verification, digital flatmate agreements, bond protection, and automated rent collection for people who list and rent rooms.

This policy explains how we handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). By using SafeShare, you agree to the practices described here.

2. Information we collect

We collect the following categories of personal information:

  • Account information — your name, email address, and the password or third-party sign-in (e.g. Google) you use to authenticate.
  • Identity verification data— when you verify your identity, our provider (Stripe Identity) collects government-issued ID and a selfie to confirm it’s you. We receive the verification result and limited details (such as your verified name); we do not store copies of your ID documents ourselves.
  • Profile information — details you choose to add, such as your bio, preferences, occupation, and photos.
  • Listing & tenancy information — property and room details, agreements, and tenancy records you create or are party to.
  • Payment & banking information — processed by Stripe for subscriptions, bond, and rent. Card and bank-account details are handled by Stripe; we do not store full card numbers.
  • Communications — messages you send us (e.g. support enquiries) and notifications we send you.
  • Connected accounts — if you connect a social account (Facebook, X, or LinkedIn) to share a room listing, we store the tokens needed to post on your behalf, which you can revoke at any time.
  • Technical & usage data — device, browser, and log information collected automatically to keep the service secure and working.

3. How we use your information

  • Provide, operate, and improve the SafeShare service.
  • Verify identities and maintain trust and safety across the platform.
  • Process subscriptions, bond, and rent payments.
  • Create and manage agreements and tenancies.
  • Communicate with you about your account, security, and the service.
  • Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, and security incidents.
  • Comply with our legal obligations and enforce our terms.

4. When we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only as needed to run the service:

  • Service providers— including Stripe (identity & payments), Convex (database & authentication), Google (sign-in), and Amazon Web Services (hosting & email). These providers process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy obligations.
  • Other users— when you list a room, apply, vouch, or enter a tenancy, relevant profile and trust signals are shared with the people you interact with. Publicly shareable room links are designed never to expose a property’s exact street address.
  • Legal & safety — where required by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of SafeShare, our users, or the public.
  • Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this policy.

5. Identity verification

Identity checks are performed by Stripe Identity. The collection and handling of your ID document and biometric selfie are governed by Stripe’s privacy terms. SafeShare receives the outcome of the check and a limited set of verified attributes so we can display your verification status and keep the community safe.

6. Data retention

We keep personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the service, then for as long as required to meet legal, tax, accounting, and dispute-resolution obligations. When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it.

7. Security

We use technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and reputable infrastructure providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and to respond promptly to any incident.

8. Your rights

You can:

  • Access and update most of your information directly in your account settings.
  • Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Ask us to correct or delete your information, subject to legal limits.
  • Withdraw consent for optional processing, such as disconnecting a social account.

To make a request, get in touch through our contact form. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.

9. Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, and keep the service secure. See our Cookie Policy for details.

10. Children

SafeShare is intended for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.

11. Overseas transfers

Some of our service providers store or process data outside Australia. Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information is handled consistently with the APPs.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you.
